// La Pupuña![]() © Alex Robinson // La Pupuña
Brazilian rising stars La Pupuña are at the heart of a resurgence of energy and invention in the music scene of Belem. The young band formed in 2004 and mix rock, merengue, surf music, and brega (Belem pop) with guitarrada (the folk guitar style which dominates the state of Para). Adriano Sousa (drums), Marcio Goés (bass), Diego Muralha (guitar), Luiz Félix (guitar and percussion), Rodolfo Santana (keyboards) and Ytanaã Figueiredo (vocals and percussion) pay due respects to the old masters – the Mestres da Guitarrada (Aldo Sena, Curica and Mestre Vieira) - talismanic purveyors of the hugely popular instrumentals which draw on carimbo and cumbia. La Pupuña electrify guitarrada, throwing in influences like The Clash, Dick Dale and Pink Floyd, and take it to the dancefloor for the next generation.
